Garden Update | Fall is coming!
Last night, Denver went under its first frost advisory for the season. Over night, temps in our area fell to about 37 degrees. Fret not, the garden survived.
Fall is usually an exciting time celebrating harvests – something we’ve certainly been doing around the ol’ urban homestead. I also realize it had been a good while since I updated on the status of our own garden. Been a busy couple of weeks with venturing out to a farm, spending lots of time canning and preserving food, and generally preparing for the cold months ahead.
Even with all of that going on, our garden is still producing food like crazy! The weather is markedly cooler (no more 100 days!) and we’ve been having some fluctuation in the amount of moisture coming from the sky. Autumn is coming, but that doesn’t seem to stop our garden from tossing out the last of the season’s bounty.

Sept 20, 2011
The squash, even after surviving round after round of weird mildew, has sprouted new leaves and continue to sprawl all over the place, spitting out delicious things to eat.

New squash leaves and some newer eggplants

Cooler nights mean the peppers have been a little more productive
Our raised bed with the fall plantings has been doing very well. We have broccoli, mizuna lettuce, and radishes.

Fall bed.
New pumpkins are starting on the vine as well. After our first 11 pounder was cut off, two more started growing. However, squirrels ate them. Two more have since started, hopefully Lucky will do her job and keep the pests at bay.

I have also been seriously considering starting a specialty blog just for pictures of really ugly tomatoes. This one just started growing off one of our plants, I think it was supposed to be 5 different tomatoes which have since grown into one. It’ll be a winner for sure.

Ugly Tomatoes Dot Com!
That’s about it for this week. Hopefully you have all had plenty to grow and preserve! We’ve been a bit busy on that ourselves:
